Ms.Maggie & the Cat’s Pyjamas

British/Australian jazz vocalist Amanda Magrin (Maggie) returned to her home town in South Wales after living in Australia for 30 years. During that time she was a regular performer at Dizzys Jazz Club in Melbourne and the surrounding jazz scene and has also performed at the major local jazz festivals and with big bands & swing dance events. She has a background in musical theatre but now sings mostly jazz/blues/swing. 

She is the front woman and creator behind Ms. Maggie & The Cat’s Pyjamas. A high energy 4-7 piece band playing 1920-30s jazz, blues and swing with a New Orleans vibe! The band is fairly new to the jazz scene but its members are all highly regarded veterans of their craft and have been performing regularly at the jazz festival circuit including Brecon, Upton, Aberjazz, Penarth and  Abergavenny. Expect some unexpected lyrics to instrumental works in the mix. 

Amanda also sings more contemporary jazz in a duo/trio/quartet/quintet with plans of performing and releasing some of her own original material in the near future. 

A childhood obsession with watching musicals and listening to her dad’s Louis Armstrong and Frank Sinatra records led to her discovery of jazz & blues. She was later influenced by Ella Fitzgerald and Nina Simone. 

Her love of singing songs from musicals continues which lends to her ability to tell a story in song and accentuate in all of the right places. Recent gig themes include ‘Cole Porter meets Gershwin’ and The Billie Holiday Songbook’ which are a great success! Other themed events are also available and can be tailored to your requirements.

Amanda was a late bloomer when it came to performing in public but winning various singing competitions in Melbourne gave her the confidence to pursue jazz singing more seriously. She was unofficially trained by the head of (VCA) The Victorian College of The Arts when a local vocal coach referred her after hearing her sing. Her voice is repeatedly described as ‘beautiful’ and ‘amazing’ with a ‘timbre that makes the hairs on the back of your neck stand on end’.

Amanda (Maggie) is available for hire with a band in a variety of configurations to suit your event or as a soloist for guest spots, session work or with backing tracks.
